Letter Carriers Food Drive

Saturday, May 10, 2008 is the National Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive.  All across America, letter carriers and postal workers will be collecting non-perishable food items for local food banks.  The food drive for our Food Bank of Eastern Michigan on Lapeer Road in Flint, will be coordinated by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), the Greater Flint AFL-CIO Central Labor Council and United Way of Genesee County.

The need for non-perishable food donations has risen dramatically.  It has been noted that well over 50% of the people who utilize the services of our local food bank are families of the “working poor.”  It has become a severe hardship for people to provide the essentials such as shelter, utilities and food for their family.  At today's wage compensation, the family budget can be decimated by expenses for medical bills, transportation, child care, clothing and such.

On Saturday, May 10th you can help by placing non-perishable food items by your mailbox.  Your donation could make the difference in whether or not someone will have something to eat.  There is no definitive face of hunger.  The faces are every age and every color.  It is a normal human response for someone to wake up hungry; but going to bed hungry shouldn’t be….especially for a child.   You can help make the difference in someone’s life.  Please remind your families, friends, church members, co-workers and neighbors to place non-perishable food items by their mailboxes on May 10th for their mail carriers to collect.

This is a community volunteer driven effort.  If you would like to be a part of this drive or make a monetary donation please call Cindy Cromwell, AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison at United Way of Genesee County @ 810.762.5827.   Together we can make a difference in someone’s life, one day at a time or one meal at a time, but working together to make a difference in our community is what matters.
