AGENCIES RECEIVE EMERGENCY FOOD/SHELTER
PROGRAM GRANTS


Agencies providing emergency food, shelter and energy assistance to Genesee and Lapeer County residents, have been approved for a federal grant administered locally by the United Way of Genesee County, through the Emergency Food and Shelter Local Board Program.

For the past twenty-six years, Genesee and Lapeer Counties have been awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program totaling $9,932,070.  This year, Genesee County received $402,630 and Lapeer County received $83,649.

Genesee County has distributed funds through the Catholic Charities North End Soup Kitchen, Catholic Outreach, Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Genesee County Community Resource Department’s Neighborhood Service Center, Genesee County Community Mental Health, Salem Housing Community Development Center, The Salvation Army, Shelter of Flint, Inc., VISTA Center and the YWCA.  These agencies were responsible for providing 155,050 meals, 3,843 nights of mass shelter, 543 rent and/or mortgage eviction prevention payments, and 350 utility shut-off prevention payments in the past grant year (Oct. 1, 06 – Dec. 31, 07).

Lapeer County has distributed funds through the Columbiaville United Methodist Church Food Pantry, Department of Human Services Local Board, Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Hispanic Service Center, Lapeer Area Citizens Against Domestic Assault, and North Branch Emergency Aid.  These agencies were responsible for providing 60,597 meals, 403 nights of mass shelter, 38 rent and/or mortgage eviction prevention payments, and 75 utility shut-off prevention payments in the past grant year (Oct. 1, ‘06 – Dec. 31, ‘07).
